Professional Bio
Dr Sabrina Syed is a person with diversified knowledge and experiences in education and social issues, having an extensive focus on research and teaching with exposure to Australia and foreign realities in the field, enabling her ability to understand and contribute to the community and evolving economy of the ever-growing education sector. Her PhD research analysed diversity, social and political aspects of education and students' lives, broadly covering the aspects of women's education. Her research contributes critical new insights into students' lives, thus improving the global education strategy and performance. Some of the other research projects she is involved with titled Money Matters for Women Leaving Violence, Quality Teaching Round, Inclusion of Parents and Families in Child Protection Processes, Gender and Social Inclusion for Climate Information Systems in Vanuatu, Challenges for NGO Peak bodies in Human Services in Disaster Response and Recovery: Rebuilding Community within a Market Environment and The Evaluation of the Netherlands Support to Primary Education in Bangladesh. Some of her research findings are published and presented on national and international platforms, with more to follow. Her bachelor's degree focused on science and mathematics teaching, and her master's in educational psychology. She is a post-doctoral researcher of a Maths Retraining Program and a sessional academic staff at the University of Newcastle. She is passionate about research and community work, encouraged her to work for women through Gender Research Network (GRN) in Hunter Region. Before moving to Australia, Dr Syed worked in a University Lecturer position in Bangladesh for more than five years. Her professional experiences in teaching, research and other services helped her develop excellent organisational and interpersonal skills. She developed skills to relate well to students and the community through multiple leadership and student engagement positions during her time in tertiary education. She has been awarded the "Faculty of Education and Arts HDR Student Engagement Award 2020" and "Higher Degree by Research Excellence Award" to recognise her continuous effort to create a positive and inclusive student community at the University of Newcastle. While community services within and outside the University are always her priority, along with teaching and research, Dr Syed loves writing and publishing her works in different formats, including op-eds, journal articles, book chapters, newsletters, and online articles.
