Professional Bio
I have been teaching high school maths in Sydney for 25 years.
The inspiration behind Elumat.com was while working at a poorly resourced school early in my teaching career. The reading age of the students was well below state average. I created a Word/Excel version, which was ultimately used there as part of a sit-together-and-read program. Local primary schools showed strong interest in the program, but it required a more user-friendly interface. The site went live at the beginning of 2023 and is free for all teachers to use.
I had the opportunity to present it at the August 2023 PULiiMA conference in Darwin. The theme of that conference was to promote digital technologies that encourage the reclamation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. I acknowledge that the site still requires substantial decolonising and requires community input regarding the use of language. I hope that the simplicity of the numeracy and literacy aspects of Elumat might see it play a part in improving educational outcomes for all school students of any language across the globe, particularly where resources are limited.
